This, is not exactly a Semarangan travel spot, to be honest… It is located at Ambarawa, a small town not too far from Semarang, probably two hours far by car or so. But this place is where a lot of Semarang citizen went to on short holidays. Gua Maria Kerep is not only a religious traveling spot (as it was actually a place where Catholics can pray) but now it also has been a recreation place for families.
Gua Maria Kerep is located 500 meters from Terminal Ambarawa, it is quite far from the main road, so it is really quiet and peaceful. For it is located on the mountain, the air is really fresh and you can have the view of Telomoyo mountain, Merbabu mountain and Rawa Pening lake.
There is also a traditional market across the front gate (picture right side) where they sold candles, flowers, books, and also foods.
You can enter Gua Maria Kerep for free, but there are also donation boxes if you want to donates some 😀
There are also Via Dolorosa mock-up, a chapel, and, the highlight of my trip last December, the garden. This garden is not a normal garden, it is telling the story of Jesus’s lifetime. Starting from the baptism of Jesus in Jordan to the resurrection of Jesus. This garden is also filled with many plants, mostly tropical plants, with their names pasted on a piece of wood nearby each of them.
Anyway, whether you’re going to pray there or not, the garden is a really good place to go. And after the long walk, you can eat the foods from the market, they have delicious Sate Ayam 😀
